Silver Filigree is an ancient art believed to have originated in Mesopotamia and Egypt. It spread to Asia around the 2500 BC and the filigrees found in Greece and India share similar patterns and processes to this day; perhaps an evidence of common influence. In the pre-mechanisation era, the production process relied on manually beating silver ingots, drawing out thin wires of different thickness by a long process. The hair-like fine wires are still drawn out by this method. It’s a complex technique, where wires are wound, heated, flattened, bent, crimped and combined with other components to create delicate filigree. Indeed, it would be appropriate to say that filigree is the ultimate showcase of the skill of human hands.
Filigree, is also called as filigrann or filigrene. Made of gold and silver, it is a unique craft form displaying delicate jewellery metalwork which consists of curling, twisting and plaiting malleable metal threads. Spoons, cigarette buttons, boxes, ashtrays, cases, jewellery, buttons, paandaans , perfume containers , temples, statues of gods and goddesses are created in this form. The twisted silver wire used in Filigree renders a rare charm to the art.
